Vinted's scale means counterfeit items do appear on the platform. Most sellers are genuine, but the risk of buying a fake is real — especially for sought-after brands. Here's how to authenticate items before you buy, brand by brand.
General Red Flags (Applies to All Brands)
- Price too low for condition: A "genuine" CP Company goggle jacket at €15 is almost certainly fake. Know the realistic floor price for authentic items.
- Blurry or few photos: Authentic sellers with genuine items have nothing to hide. Few photos = something to hide.
- Won't provide additional photos: Ask for specific photos (inner label, serial numbers, close-up of logo). Refusal is a red flag.
- New account, zero reviews: Not necessarily fake, but higher risk. Ask more questions.
- Description copy-pasted from a website: "100% genuine, tags intact, BNWT" — real sellers write naturally.
Stone Island Authentication
Stone Island is the most faked brand on Vinted. Key checks:
- The badge: The removable Compass patch should feel substantial, not flimsy. Stitching on the back should be neat. The letters on the badge should be crisp — blurry text is a fake indicator.
- Serial tag inside collar: Genuine pieces have a serial number inside the collar. Ask for a clear photo. The serial should be consistent with the season the piece is supposedly from.
- Lining colour coding: Stone Island uses specific lining colours to indicate garment type. Mismatched lining is a major red flag.
- Zips: Genuine Stone Island uses YKK zips on most pieces. Check the zip puller for branding.
Nike Sneaker Authentication
- Box and label: Ask for a photo of the box with barcode, size label inside the shoe, and the shoe itself. The size on the box, tongue label, and insole should all match.
- Stitching on swoosh: Genuine Nike has clean, even stitching. Fakes often have uneven, loose stitches.
- Sole quality: Fake soles often look slightly different in colour or texture. The tread pattern should be crisp and deep.
- NIKE AIR text: On Air cushion models, the text in the air unit should be perfectly clear, not smeared.
Gucci Accessories
- Hardware: Genuine Gucci hardware is heavy and has a clean, engraved logo. Fakes use lightweight hardware with a stamped logo that often looks slightly off-centre.
- Stitching: Even, tight stitching throughout. Count stitches per centimetre — genuine Gucci is consistent.
- Serial number: Most genuine Gucci bags have a serial number heat-stamped inside. Ask for a clear photo of this.
- Monogram pattern: GG logo pattern should always meet symmetrically at the seams. Misaligned patterns indicate fakes.
CP Company
- Goggle lens quality: The lens on goggle jackets should be clear and distortion-free. Cheap plastic lenses with visible bubbles or cloudiness are fake indicators.
- Interior label: The interior label uses specific fonts and layouts that have changed over seasons. Mismatched fonts are a flag.
- Lens mechanism: On genuine pieces, the goggle mechanism integrates cleanly with the hood. On fakes, the attachment often looks awkward or uses different stitching.
What to Do If You Receive a Fake
Don't confirm receipt in the Vinted app. Open a dispute immediately, explain the item is not as described (counterfeit goods are definitionally not as described), and Vinted's buyer protection will cover a refund. Photograph the discrepancies clearly before shipping anything back.
The Best Prevention: Move Faster with Less Risk
Ironically, one benefit of real-time monitoring with Vinted Monitor is that you're often seeing new listings from established sellers before fraudulent accounts have time to gain traction. Sellers with genuine history and multiple positive reviews are far less likely to be selling fakes — and monitoring tools let you act on those listings first.
